How does chiropractic help improve my health?
One of the main principles behind chiropractic is that when your nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) works well, the rest of your body works well. Your nervous system is the communication system in your body. In other words, when your nervous system is uninterrupted the brain can communicate with the rest of the body very efficiently. In this situation, your body is in a state of balance and health, wellness & vitality can be experienced. On the other hand, when there is interference with the nervous system, the organs of the body do not function as well. You will then experience a lack of balance and a significant decrease in your health and vitality. This can present in any number of ways including: lowered immune response (frequent colds and infections), headaches, indigestion, pain, numbness/tingling, elevated blood pressure. Any illness/sickness/pain you may be experiencing is probably a sign that your nervous system has interference and is not working at 100%.
What causes this interference and what do chiropractors do about it? What is an adjustment?
People are faced with many challenges every single day. These challenges are in the form of stressors that can be placed in 3 main categories: Physical, Emotional, and Chemical. When you are challenged with these daily stressors, it will eventually lead to a ‘subluxation’ in your spine. A subluxation is a term that chiropractors use to describe interference with the nervous system, which as you recall affects how well your whole body can function. When you have subluxations, a chiropractor will use gentle adjustments given by hand which will release tension patterns and allow the communication system of your body to flow easily and without interruption. Once nervous system balance is restored this will allow you to express a higher level of health and vitality.
Why do chiropractors focus on your spine?
When your spine is moving well (such as after a chiropractic adjustment), it sends messages to your brain which stimulate the release of ‘feel good’ hormones that play a role in many different aspects of body function. This causes your body to be in a state of balance in which you are healing, growing and repairing. In this state you will experience great health and vitality.
When your spine is not moving well (when you have subluxation), your body becomes unbalanced and begins a stress response. This causes your body to enter, and sometimes become stuck in, a state of rapid break-down. This unbalance can present in numerous different ways such as: lowered immune function, increased blood pressure, increased and wide-spread pain, arthritis symptoms, fibromyalgia, sleep troubles, indigestion, and so on.
What is the goal of chiropractic care?
Chiropractic is not a treatment or cure for anything. The main goal of chiropractic is to remove interference from your nervous system and restore balance to your body. This gives your body the best chance to heal whatever condition you may presently have so that you can start experiencing true health, vitality and wellness.
